Presentations and Education

SOQ deliver a range of public presentations and education projects.

Singing and humanity, led by academic and specialist music educator Dr Graham Sattler, is designed to engage conference participants in an understanding of just what it is that makes music, and specifically singing, theubiquitous social activity that features prominently in every documented culture throughout history.

Singing and humanityexplores the myths around ‘tone deafness’ and ‘musicality’ and demonstrates the reality that everyone can (and does) sing. It discusses the social, emotional and cultural value of singing, and its purpose for both society as a whole and individuals.

The session investigates the pivotal part that singing has played in human evolutionary development - as a civilising and socialising mechanism - and its function in communicating emotions and promoting individual and group well-being over and above spoken language (its function being largely to communicate information).

The session is (small) part lecture, large part discussion, and equally large part demonstration with group participation.

Original Australian art songs written by SOQ will provide the core of the cited examples and samples used for demonstration and participation.
